| China's Tobacco Company Reaps Profits from Country's Cigarette Addiction |
| China's tobacco market — where one-quarter of the population smokes and more than one-third of the world's cigarettes are consumed — is dominated by one player: the state-owned China National Tobacco Corporation, whose three-dozen brands collectively hold a 97% share and generate tens of billions of dollars in profit, according to the Wall Street Journal. More than 1 million people in China die each year from tobacco-related diseases, a number that officials say could triple by 2030. |
