| The Pill Made Cohabitation Part of the Marriage-Partner Selection Process |
| The birth-control pill didn't cause American women to forgo marriage in favor of cohabitation, but it did help make cohabitation a part of the mate-selection process, says Finn Christensen of Towson University in Maryland. Access to the pill is associated with a 6.1 percentage point increase in the probability that women cohabited with their husbands before marriage. The pill became widely available to single women after the Supreme Court struck down a Massachusetts law in 1972. |
