Smiling for the camera has increased over tim .
Sample Size and criteria :
The researchers collected a century’s worth of high-school yearbooks from around the U.S. to create a data set of 37,921 student portraits.
They found a rapid increase in the popularity and intensity of smiles in photographs from the 1900s to the 1950s — a trend that still continues today.
Gender Difference
They also observed another trend: women consistently smile more than men.
This analysis demonstrates how data-driven methods can discover historical visual patterns and gradual changes in social norms .
