Falling fertility rates during recession - USA

OCTOBER 31, 2011
Hispanics Had Greatest Fertility Decline in Recession
Hispanics, whose wealth and employment levels were particularly hard hit by the recent U.S. recession, also had an outsized decline in fertility in 2008 and 2009. The birth rate among women ages 15 to 44 fell 5.9% for Hispanics during that period, compared with 2.4% for blacks and 1.6% for whites, according to the Pew Research Center. Recession-linked fertility declines have been recorded for decades and probably indicate postponement of childbearing until better times rather than decisions to have fewer children, Pew says.
