A rise in retractions prompts calls for reform

 

APRIL 26, 2012 Science-Journal Retractions Rise Tenfold in a Decade The number of retraction notices published annually in Thomson Reuters' online database of scientific papers rose from about 30 in the early 2000s to more than 400 in 2011, while the volume of publications rose by only 44%, according to a Nature article reported in The New York Times. Science may have become a winner-take-all game that encourages researchers to cut corners, says Arturo Casadevall of Albert Einstein College of Medicine, editor in chief of the journal mBio.
