Accept Your Lame Duck-ness
---------------------------------
When leaders are ready to move on, they may hesitate to announce their plans because they're afraid of becoming lame ducks. What's the best way to deal with being a lame duck? Accept it.
Don't shed any tears over your loss of power. Instead, put all of your energy into supporting your successor. Coach her behind the scenes, involve her in all important decisions, and build her confidence. Most importantly, be sure you are setting up both the organization and your successor for success.
Don't be tempted to leave on a high note by making a popular decision. Continue to make the tough decisions that have set you apart as a leader and are good for the organization.
Today's Management Tip was adapted from "If You're a Lame Duck, Quack Like One" by Marshall Goldsmith.
